Absenteeism On The First Day Of School

HAVANA, September 6 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén) - September 1, the first day of the school year, was characterized by massive absenteeism, not by students but by the principals of every primary and secondary school in Havana, along with some teachers and other school administrators, all under government auspices.

From 9:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. they were closeted with president Fidel Castro in Havana’s Conventions Palace. The meeting was officially labeled "a unique beginning to the new school year."

The official description also added that "several aspects of the march of Education in the country were analyzed" and that special emphasis was made "in reinforcing the revolutionary convictions of Cuban children and youths."

There are more than one and a half million children in primary and middle school in Cuba.
