HAVANA, September - The president of the Cuban parliament told the U. S. that the medical check-up performed on Cubans emigrating to the U. S. comes at a very high cost to the Cuban government. Yet the same government charges Cubans who wish to leave 400 dollars, or three and a half years salary
to the average Cuban, for a medical check-up that consists of little more than an X-ray and a blood test.
In response to a dispute regarding migratory accords between Cuba and the United States, National Assembly president Ricardo Alarcón de Quesada read the diplomatic note from the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, saying that the medical check-up that U.S. Immigration requires to admit
Cubans came at a high cost to the Cuban government, the sole supplier of medical care in the island.
The government performs the tests for Tb and syphilis, and charges Cubans wishing to emigrate to the U. S. 400 dollars, or 8,400 pesos. Thats the equivalent of three and a half years salary at the average 200 peso a month Cuban wage.
