HAVANA, September 4 (Manuel David Orrio, CPI) Forty years of architecture and civil engineering under the government of Fidel Castro have not produced structures of transcendental value, according to a report by the Union of Architects and Civil Engineers of Cuba.
The report lists structures classified as "marvels of Cuban civil engineering," among them the Aqueduct at Albear, the Central Highway, the Capitol in Havana, the bridge at Bacunayagua, the Viaduct at La Farola, the Tunnel under the bay of Havana and the FOCSA apartment building. They
were all completed before Castros arrival in 1959.
Some of the structures were, in their time, victories over world class construction challenges, said one engineer.
Daniel, an architect and designer of modern buildings for the tourist industry, pointed out the rejection of projects built after 1959, such as the National Highway and the Palace of Conventions.
