Land Is For The Revolutionaries

Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI

PINAR DEL RIO, September - "The Cuban government will never forgive those who opposed it in the sixties in the mountains of Escambray..." Ministry of Agriculture official Carlos Vázquez told residents of a "captive town" in this province.

At the end of August, the official met with a group of descendants of people who had fought in the mountains of Escambray, in central Cuba, and that as a result were relocated to this westernmost province and never allowed to go back to their ancestral homes.

The official called the relocated people a "potential danger to the Cuban government." The residents of the captive towns, all peasants, have never been allowed even the use of land in their new surroundings.

"The land is for the revolutionaries," they have been told. Many years back, the revolutionary tribunals that condemned those that rose in the mountains against the government, stated: "This chain will be dragged even by their descendants."

The residents of the captive towns López Peña, Briones Montoto and others are either ex political prisoneres, or relatives of those condemned to death or killed in combat in the sixties.

Ministry of Agriculture official Vázquez warned the residents: "For you, there are two alternatives. You can leave the country, or you can accept the regulations in place for enemies of the revolution that provide relative security for the rest of the country..."
