HAVANA, August 31 (Jesús Zúñiga) Payments by employers into the Social Security fund are at an all-time low for the first quarter of 2000.
"Out of 1,745 audits performed so far this year, irregularities were detected in 1,071 government agencies that pay into the social security fund," said an official with the Ministry of Finances and Prices, who asked to be identified only as "Cristina."
According to "Cristina" the most notorious deadbeats are the ministries of Agriculture, Sugar, and Tourism, and the firms connected with the Popular Power (national and local governments) with arrears "in excess of 8 million pesos."
"Cristina" also said that the National Assembly may consider a measure to impose a tax of up to 7 percent on workers salaries for social security at its last session of the year in December.
