Workers In State Stores Aren't Paid For Extra Hours On The Job

LAS TUNAS, August 31 (Ramón Humberto Colás, Lux InfoPress) – Workers who hold much-sought-after jobs at government-run dollar stores here don't get paid overtime for the extra hours they work, in contravention of Cuban labor laws.

The workers are asked to work 10, 12 hours a day and occasionally more, but only get paid for the normal 8 hour day. Yet they are reluctant to complain for fear of being fired from the highly-prized jobs in the dollar economy.

The official government syndicate does not raise its voice either.

"These workers are exploited openly by the Cuban government and the only benefit they receive is a bag with some personal care items, a liter of cooking oil and some other trinkets," said one labor activist who didn't want his name used.
