Fla. Man Seeks Help in Retrieving Son

WASHINGTON, 27 (AP) - A Florida man, whose ex-wife took their 5-year-old son to Cuba without telling him, came to Washington to seek official help Monday in getting the boy back.

Jon Colombini and his attorney met for two hours with officials at the State Department, a department official said.

"We talked about his options,'' the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The official said since Colombini is in contact with his ex-wife and son in Cuba, the department hopes the divorced parents will work out their differences without involving the two governments.

Colombini, 31, also hoped to meet with officials at the Cuban Interests Section in Washington later in the day, but it was unclear whether the meeting occurred. Neither Colombini's lawyer nor Cuban officials returned repeated phone calls seeking confirmation.

Colombini is kitchen manager at a restaurant in Homestead, Fla., where he lives with his second wife. He says his U.S.-born son was taken two weeks ago by the boy's Cuban-born mother, Arletis Blanco, 29, then living in Key Largo, Fla. A court had awarded Colombini and Blanco joint custody of the child.

In Cuba, the Communist Party daily Granma has reported the boy and his mother are staying with relatives in the island's eastern province.

Instances in which one parent abducts a child and takes the child out of the country are not uncommon in the United States. The State Department said this year it had more than 1,100 active cases of such international flight.

The Colombini case has drawn interest in Florida because it follows the highly publicized Elian Gonzalez saga. In that case, the Cuban boy's mother died in a boat wreck as they fled Cuba to America, and Miami relatives refused to send him home to his father because they didn't want the child to grow up in communist-ruled Cuba. Under court orders, Juan Miguel Gonzalez took his son home eight months after the accident on Thanksgiving Day 1999.
