In Cuba, Marcos Lazaro Leon Torres, National Coordinator of the peaceful
opposition group 30th of November Democratic Party, was arbitrarily detained on
Wednesday, November 1st, 2000 in the early hours of the morning by Cuban state
security agents at his home located in the neighborhood of La Rosita in San
Francisco de Paula, municipality of San Miguel del Padron in Havana.
This human rights activist is presently confined in a "tapiada", a
cell with no sunlight at the Technical Department of Investigation, located at
Cien and Aldabo Streets in Havana. Marcos Lazaro is 38 years old, a teacher,
married, and father of two minors.
The 30th of November Democratic Party is an opposition group inside Cuba
which struggles for a democratic transition in the Island through nonviolent
civil desobedience. On Friday, November 3, Marcos Lazaro intended to participate
in a peaceful act in the province of Matanzas, planned to remember the first
anniversary of the incarceration by Cuban authorities of a fellow human rights
activist, prisoner of conscience.
We urgently alert all international entities that promote human rights and
democracy in the world that, the government of Brazil has granted Marcos Lazaro
Torres Leon a visa, and is officially invited to attend the Second Global
Assembly Of the World Movement for Democracy in Sao Paulo to be held November
12-15, 2000. It will be the sole responsibility of the Cuban government if
Marcos Lázaro León Torres is not able to attend this conference.
