Tranquilizers are in short supply in Cuba

HAVANA, November 5 (Rafael Pérez, AFPCP) - The Ministry of Public Health has ordered physicians to limit prescriptions for tranquilizers as a means of dealing with chronic shortages of the medicines.

Family doctors prescribe no more than 20 pills and emergency rooms no more than 10 at a time. Common tranquilizers such as Diazepam, Meprobamate and Nitrazepan have practically disappeared from Cuban pharmacy shelves. They are, however, available in dollar-denominated pharmacies and in the black market, at approximately one peso a pill.
