BANGKOK, Thailand, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Thailand and Cuba signed a mutual
cooperation agreement Friday and agreed to the opening of a Cuban Embassy in
Bangkok in 2002.
Visiting Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Jose Guerra Menchero said the
signing of the agreement would accelerate the establishment of closer relations
between the two countries in a variety fields, including tourism, technology
transfer and the fight against international criminals.
"An embassy will be opened in Bangkok in 2002," Menchero said
after signing the agreement at the Thai Foreign Ministry.
Menchero's Thai counterpart, Deputy Foreign Minister Sukhumphand Paribatra,
said the countries would draft additional agreements aimed at enhancing economic
cooperation and promoting sporting links.
Cuba's reputation in Thailand soared last month amid national celebrations
after a Thai flyweight boxer trained by a Cuban coach won a gold medal at the
recent Sydney Olympics.
