New bills on environment being prepared in Cuba
Havana, Nov 1, IRNA-PL-Pool -- Cuba'S Parliament is preparing three decrees
on biological bio-diversity, protection of the ozone layer and responsibility
for environmental endangerment, in order to strengthen Cuba's current
environmental legislation
Cuban Parliament's Education, Culture and Science and Technology Committee
vice-president, Jose Diaz, stated that the laws will complement legislation
approved February 1981 establishing basic principles for the preservation,
protection and transformation of the environment and the rational use of
natural resources.
The Cuban government's wishes concerning the environment are expressed in
Constitution Article 27, referring to environmental protection and the country's
natural resources to promote sustainable economic and social development,
stated the Parliament member.
Diaz added that his committee supervises state and government organizations
related to the environment, apart from visiting institutions, territories and
holding public hearings, polls and interviews of the population on this topic.
Cuba actively contributed to the international environmental law in the
last decade and signed various global laws, such as the agreement for the
protection of world natural and cultural heritage, pointed out Diaz.
The Island is also included among the International treaty signers of
Maritime law, trade of endangered flora and fauna, biological bio-diversity,
weather changes and protection of the ozone layer.
Among the documents signed by Cuba, the deputy also mentioned treaties on
controlling cross-border movement of dangerous wastes and their elimination,
the fight against desertification and drought, and one related to development,
production, storage and use of chemical weapons.
