HAVANA, October 31 (María Elena Rodríguez, Cuba-Verdad) -
Yesterdays trial of Iovany Aguilar Camejo ended with the imposition of a
600 peso fine on the dissident. The prosecution was asking for a year in jail
and a 300 peso fine for Aguilar.
The trial was closed to all but Aguilars mother, his wife and an
uncle. The family had secured the services of a lawyer to represent Aguilar one
hour before the proceedings because they received very short notice of the
trial.
"Through an anonymous phone call it was that we learned that Iovani
would be tried the next morning," said his mother. The call came at 9 p. m.
day before yesterday.
Aguilar faced charges of "disobedience" because he wore a shirt
with a legend that read "Liberty for Political Prisoners" while he was
confined at the Valle Grande prison in Havana. The shirt was confiscated by the
prisons guards, and authorities nevertheless decided to prosecute him.
Aguilar was freed after the trial. He had been in jail since May, when he
and three others tried to deliver a letter to the Directorate of Prisons of the
Interior Ministry, asking for respect for the human rights of prisoners.
