HAVANA, May 25 (Rev. Pedro Crespo Jiménez, Grupo de Trabajo Decoro) The long lines of people waiting to apply for visas in front of the United States Interests Section in Havana has become a source of jobs for some.
A new breed of entrepreneur sells places in line to applicants who would rather pay than put up with a wait of up to four months requiring several visits per week for an appointment. The going price is 1,400 pesos or U.S. $70.
Others set up shop filling out visa forms at 25 pesos for applicants under 60 and 50 pesos for anyone older. There are some who engage in these activities to finance their own migratory procedures.
