Laborer Dies After Fall From Roof

VILLA CLARA, May 23 (Isabel Rey, Cuba Press) - A laborer died after falling 26 feet (8 meters) from a roof he was repairing in La Esperanza, a small town in central Cuba.

The worker, José Miguel Marrero Sánchez, 32, was working on the roof of a bakery when it gave way under him. Marrero was attached to the construction brigades of the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC). There was no indication of whether his work was connected to the film industry or whether he had been assigned to general construction work in the town.

There were reports that Marrero’s death was due to the failure to adhere to workplace safety standards and that the official responsible for the implementation of workplace safety was under investigation.

Although there are strict safety standards on the books in Cuba, they are often flouted due to lack of the proper equipment.
