Massive Sweep Of Street People In Santiago

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, May 12 (Luis Alberto Rivera, APLO) The National Revolutionary Police carried out a massive sweep of vagrants, homeless, and street people in this, Cubas second largest city, on April 29.

The police action was centered at the intersection of Trocha and Corona streets, in the center of the city. After detaining their targets, police sat them on the ground to await transport to the 4th Police Unit. At one time they had more than 20 such detainees sitting together.

Passersby yelled Dont mistreat them! Dont pick on them! and They are not delinquents! referring to the homeless, who are usually alcoholics or mentally unbalanced.

One passerby said: The government carries out these military operations to drive vagrants from the streets and give the impression, especially to foreigners, that here in Cuba there are no negative aspects.
