HAVANA, May 8 (Vicente Escobal, Lux InfoPress) - The Hupmann cigarette factory in Havana has been closed since last March for renovation and installation of new technology. The plant is expected to reopen at the end of the year.
Approximately 200 workers were reassigned and more than 100 were sent home at 70% of their regular pay. It is estimated that about 25% of the workers will be displaced by the new technology. "I hope that at my age they won't make me go through retraining," said one worker with more
than 20 years experience.
The government's Cuban Tobacco Company has embarked on an investment program in association with a Brasilian firm to modernize cigarette factories. The modernization program is expected to result in lay-offs for a number of workers.
