The Clinton-Castro Condominium

by William F. Jasper. The New American. May 22, 2000. Vol. 16, No. 11

The Elián Gonzalez affair has revealed what informed U.S.-Cuba observers have long recognized: the policies of the Clinton and Castro regimes for U.S.-Cuban relations are virtually indistinguishable. Since entering the White House, Bill Clinton has been moving inexorably toward full normalization of relations with Fidel’s Communist regime. Most recently, Gregory Craig, Clinton’s longtime political crony and lead defense attorney, was dispatched to Havana to "fix" the Elián problem for the Clinton-Castro condominium. Mr. Craig claims to be representing Juan Miguel Gonzalez, but his real clients are Bill and Fidel. The following is an abbreviated record of Bill Clinton’s pro-Castro/anti-American program:

• In 1994, Clinton National Security Council staffer Morton Halperin (whose radical record and KGB ties have been extensively exposed by this magazine) authored a plan to help Castro by lifting sanctions on business and travel between the U.S. and Cuba and setting up educational, scientific, and cultural exchanges between the two countries — at a time when Castro was stepping up repression against rising popular dissent.

• In 1995, Clinton announced a new agreement with Castro by which the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard would assist the Communist regime in capturing and returning to Cuba those refugees who manage to escape Castro’s dictatorship.

• In June 1996, only four months after Castro’s Soviet MiGs shot down two planes of the humanitarian Brothers to the Rescue, a video tape surfaced showing Clinton’s foreign policy advisor Anthony Lake, a longtime radical comrade of Morton Halperin, and Clinton military officials in a friendly meeting in Cuba with one of Castro’s top murderers, General Perez Perez.

• In July 1996, President Clinton announced that he would prevent immediate implementation of the Helms-Burton Act, which he had signed months before, thus denying Americans the opportunity under the act to sue companies that traffic in property taken from them by the Castro regime.

• In 1995, convicted Cuban cocaine kingpin Jorge Cabrera became a major contributor to the Clinton-Gore campaign.

• In 1998, President Clinton granted clemency to 14 unrepentant FALN terrorists, the ultra-violent, Communist group trained and directed by Castro’s DGI.

• Clinton has been moving to close the U.S. naval facility at Vieques, Puerto Rico, a longtime goal of Castro and his FALN-Macheteros terror groups.

• In 1999, Clinton gave a diplomatic visa to Fernando Garcia Bielsa, Castro’s chief of terror operations in the Western Hemisphere, allowing him to operate out of the Cuban Interests Section in Washington, D.C.

• Throughout his administration, Bill Clinton has covered up or explained away the massive evidence that Fidel Castro is a major player in the deadly drug offensive against the U.S.

• When Castro’s DGI thugs viciously attacked and beat up American citizens who were peacefully demonstrating against Castro in Washington, D.C., on April 14th, the Clinton administration completely ignored the outrageous incident (see sidebar on page 18).
