FROM CUBA

The Same Story

HAVANA, April - A few weeks ago, the government of Cuba said that Elián González was a show child. "The relatives in Miami have profited from him. They have used him to get rich."

Now that Elián is with his father, the family in Cuba sent him a video done by Cuban TV. Many in Cuba ask: "Hasn't the family in Cuba also profited?"

Someone said: "This is the same story; the only thing that's changed is the place. The Miamians benefited from Elián, but what about the Cubans? They should be ashamed to run that video on TV, showing stuff children in Cuba can not have."

It is no secret here that the only ones that have large houses with swimming pools are the big shots.

"Surely Elián is going to have a different fate than my nephew Javier. When he turned 7, they took away his milk ration," said Gisela, a 39-year-old woman.

Two bystanders at the Carlos III market were commenting how ashamed they felt by the new Elián video. "We are doing the same thing the Miami relatives did before, but now it's supposed to be all right. The grandmothers don't wear the same clothes they wore when this started." Some were saying that they wear clothes that are not available to the Cuban in the street.
