HAVANA, April 28 - The Ministry of the Fishing Industry has given out figures for its accomplishments for the year 1999, claiming spectacular growth in relation to the previous year, but no concrete figures are given.
The figures claim, for example, an increase of 14.7% in fish farming, lobster catch up 5% and tuna up 17%. But there are no figures given for total catch, either for 1999 or 1998, so the average Cuban who seldom if ever eats fish or lobster, must take the results on faith.
Most of the fish in Cuba goes for export or to the tourist trade, that is, to the hard currency market. Very little is sold locally for pesos, at very high prices. Ordinary Cubans caught fishing face fines and loss of the catch and fishing tackle. They must make do, when it becomes available
under the rationing system, with canned fish imported from Chile.
