Government Still Unable To Deal With Illegal Cattle Slaughter

HAVANA, April 26 (Lucas Garve, CPI) - In spite of numerous legal and enforcement efforts, the Cuban government has not been able to put a stop to the theft and illegal slaughter of cattle.

Under the Cuban system of economic planning and of rationing of food stuffs, any cattle slaughter outside the government plan is illegal. Since the Cuban herd has been reduced by poor planning decisions and by lack of feed, it cannot meet the needs of the population for milk and beef. The government has been trying to build it up to previous levels. Beef and milk are available, however, at the government dollar stores.
