Transportation Problems To Continue In Foreseeable Future

HAVANA, March 27 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén) - There will be no more vehicles for the public transportation system and no more permits for private operators, according to Ricardo Jiménez, provincial director of transportation in this city.

Jiménez said that only 85% of the transportation plan is being fulfilled. He added that the 240 Mercedes Benz buses which will be put in service are replacements and not additions to the fleet. 140 of the buses will be assembled in Guanajay, near Havana.

The challenge with the rest of the buses is to maintain them, said Jiménez. The launches that ply Havana harbor will be outfitted with new engines. As for the private operators, who have shown they could be an option to alleviate the transportation problems, the government has prohibited the granting of new licenses.
