HAVANA, March 24 (Reynaldo Cosano Alén) - Horacio Marrero Viciedo's life got awfully complicated when he lost his ID. Complicated enough that he may have to spend one year, eight months and 22 days in jail.
When police recently asked Marrero to identify himself, he explained that he had lost his ID card, which all Cubans are required to carry. Police arrested him, booked him and, after three days in jail, fined him 300 pesos.
When Marrero didn't pay on time, it became 600 pesos. Marrero's options now are to convince a labor court to allow him to pay the fine gradually or to serve 600 days in jail.
