G-77 businessmen's moot opens

..........KARACHI (March 22) : At least 60 heads of state from G-77 countries, including Pakistan, are likely to participate in the South Summit scheduled to be held in Havana, Cuba, in April.

..........This information was provided to an FPCCI delegation during their meeting with G-77 Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman, B. M. Katatumba, from Uganda, and G-77 CCI Vice-Chairman Raul Becerra, from Cuba.

..........The FPCCI delegation reached Havana on Tuesday morning to participate in the preparatory meetings of businessmen from South and 27th session of the steering committee of G-77 CCI being held in Havana on March 21-23.

..........It comprises: G-77 CCI Trade Fair Authority Chairman, Tariq Sayeed, Engineer M. A. Jabbar and Sheikh Shakeel Ahmed Dhingra, members FPCCI managing committee, G-77 CCI (Asia Pacific), Consultant Aamar Gulzar Qureshi and G-77 CCI Secretary General, Anwar-ul-Haque.

..........According to information received here, 35 countries are participating in businessmen's forum and preparatory meetings in addition to a number of entrepreneurs from Latin America and representatives of trade and industry from Cuba will also attend these meetings in which trade and market access will be subject of discussions as to how the group members should prepare to face the challenges of globalisation in the new millennium.

..........The FPCCI delegation discussed the need for early establishment of G-77 development bank so that it could take up economic issues of member countries.

..........An FPCCI press release issued here said that the Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Pakistan have rightly assessed the importance of preparatory meetings as it will provide a chance to Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf to present the national point of view on contemporary issues related to economy and politics.

..........The assessment of Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Pakistan also has the consent of Chief Executive who has expressed his desire to include private sector representatives during the summit of heads of state. The preparatory meetings will have considerable impact on the proceedings and outcome of the first ever South Summit to be attended by several heads of state of G-77 for adopting documents namely plan of action and a declaration.

..........The agenda of steering committee includes: consideration of work plan for next six months of G-77 CCI, to make preparatory work for the next phase of G-77 development bank, to make plan for holding of joint venture conference, to organise workshops in cone of member countries which will promote economic interests G-77, to arrange publication of G-77 compendium and to make arrangements for sponsoring the feasibility study of re-insurance company of G-77.
