SANTIAGO DE CUBA, March 10 (Luis Alberto Rivera, APLO) - Residents of the municipality of Songo la Maya in this eastern Cuban province have fewer transportation options as a result of the government enforcing regulations against private taxi operators.
The driver of a Willys jeep who used to ply the route Jutinicú-Songo la Maya was recently fined 500 pesos for transporting passengers without a license.
Other drivers-operators withdrew from the market when faced with the government's crack-down. The result is that the former passengers don't have a way to get around and the government has not addressed the transportation problem.
Residents of Jutinicú have to walk 10 kilometers every day and are not happy with the stepped up enforcement of regulations. "The government only provides transport from Mondays to Fridays, and at that, one departure in the morning and one in the afternoon," said one local
resident. "On weekends, there is no service. And if you get sick or happen to be in an accident, better not even think about it..."
