Engineers Arrested As They Performed Study For Agricultural Project

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, March 9 (Luis Alberto Rivera, APLO) - Engineers Elio A. Montes de Oca and Eduardo Sayago were arrested by State Security officers in Las Tunas province, eastern Cuba, as they analysed fields belonging to independent cooperatives in the area.

Montes de Oca and Sayago are technical advisors to the National Alliance of Independent Farmers of Cuba (ANAIC) and were performing a study to insure higher yields from future projects.

The engineers were taken to Department of State Security headquarters in Las Tunas, where they were questioned for most of the day and were warned that they would be punished if they continued their work on behalf of the cooperatives. Later, they were taken to the outskirts of the city and told to arrange for transportation to go home. The engineers live in Matanzas province, in western Cuba.
