HAVANA, March 8 (Mery Miranda, Cuba Press) - Enrique Alfonso González is afraid he will be in jail again by the time the South Summit convenes here in April.
Alfonso, the president of the Democratic Youth Union of Cuba, was sentenced to five years in jail in the summer of 1993 for the crime of "enemy propaganda." In April, 1995 a commission from France Liberté visited the island and Alfonso and others were granted amnesty. In
November the amnesty was revoked and Alfonso finished serving his sentence in March, 1999.
Since then, he has been looking for a job without success; he is invariably told he is "not trustworthy politically." As a result of being unemployed, he is classified as "socially dangerous."
Alfonso was summoned to appear today at the police station in Candelaria, Pinar del Río province, by lieutenant Pedro Pluma Sánchez to open a "dossier of potential delinquency" on him, based on his classification as "socially dangerous."
Enrique Alfonso González is afraid he won't be at large by the time the South Summit opens in Havana next month.
