Poor Public Phone Service in Havana

HAVANA, March 8 (María del Carmen Carro, UPECI) - There aren't many public phones in Havana, and most of the ones there are seem to be out of service on any given day.

The Cuban Telecommunications Company (ETECSA), which installed a considerable number of public booths in recent months, has not been able to explain the reason why so few phones are operational and what steps are being taken to correct the situation.

A casual survey of the newly placed phones reveals that the main problems are damaged or missing handsets and full coin boxes.

A citizen who declined to be identified said: "ETECSA is not in a hurry to add this revenue to its profits, and the situation shows they are not interested in addressing the needs of the public."
