HAVANA, June 20 (Carmelo Díaz Fernández, APSIC) - Granma province, in eastern Cuba, has the highest number of unemployed in the island, according to figures released by the Ministry of Labor.
Thirty-six thousand people are out of work, 20,000 of which are women. An official who did not want his name used said that the real figures are much higher because only those who apply to the employment office are counted.
Granma has a total population of 820,000, of which 266,000 are listed as currently employed. Seventy percent of the new jobs projected for this year will be in the agricultural sector.
