They Are Both Cuban, But Lomey Is Not Elián

CIENFUEGOS, January 25 (Olegario Delgado, Cuba Press) - Leidy Miranda, the mother of 14-year-old Lomey Moreira Miranda, called police when her daughter disappeared, but they told her they didn't have enough fuel to look for her.

The girl, a sixth grade student in the school at Aguada de Pasajeros, in central Cuba, left home on December 30 and hasn't been heard from since. She is mentally disturbed.

Her mother told police that out of all the movilizations to ask for the return to Cuba of the rafter boy, someone should save a little gasoline so that they could take care of cases like her daughter's, who is also a Cuban student.

Starting in November, 1999, every province in the country has seen rallies organized by the government to ask for the return to the island of Elián González, who reached the United States clandestinely and whose presence there has provoked a legal controversy.

Ms. Miranda told Cuba Press that the authorities haven't even broadcast her daughter's description. "Nor has anyone from her school come by to ask about her," she concluded.
