1) Dissident's Wife Fired in Fomento
FOMENTO, SANCTI SPIRITUS, January 25 (Marcos Llanes, Cuba Press) - Teidy Betancourt González was fired from her job as a pre-school teacher's aide because she is the wife of a dissident.
Betancourt was told there was no job for her in the town's nursery school after working there for two months, according to local dissidents. She is the wife of Dr. Rubén Pérez Pons, a member of the Democratic Action dissident group.
2) Fired for Refusing to Attend Elián Rally
HAVANA, January 25 (Mery Miranda, Cuba Press) - A man who sneaked away from his fellow workers at a recent Elián rally in Havana was fired from his job. Julio César Muñoz, 19, was employed by the Technical Materials Supply Enterprise of the Transportation Ministry. He had
decided not to participate in the numerous rallies held in Cuba since November 1999 to press the claims for the rafter boy Elián González.
Muñoz went to work the day after the rally and his supervisor, an official named Comesaña, told his that he could not stay on the job because he didn't participate in the political activities prescribed by the Cuban Communist Party.
Muñoz's mother talked to Mr. Comesaña, who allowed that he was a good worker, but said that he was under pressure from the PCC. Muñoz, who lives in the Santos Suárez neighborhood of Havana, belongs to the Evangelical Pentecostal Church.
