Cuba Prevents Four-Year-Old From Joining His Parents

HAVANA, January 25 (Reynaldo Cosano Alén) - Eduardo Díaz Granda and his wife, Mercedes Delgado Izaguirre, would like to have their four-year-old son with them, but Cuban emigration authorities will not allow the child to leave the country.

The couple lived in Guanabacoa, near Havana, until June 1998, when the Cuban government sent Eduardo, who is an engineer, to Ecuador as a specialist in shrimp farming. Once there, Eduardo asked for and received political asylum. Subsequently Mercedes entered into a sham marriage with a kind-hearted Ecuadoran, which allowed her to join her real husband in Ecuador. She left with the idea of coming back for their young son.

In fact, she returned to Cuba in June, 1999 and spent until the end of December fruitlessly trying to arrange the necessary paperwork so that she could take the child with her to Ecuador. The child, meantime, lives with his grandparents.

There is no apparent reason for the child not to be given his travelling papers, and the couple figure the move is in revenge for Eduardo's desertion in Ecuador.
