HAVANA, January 24 (Vicente Escobal, director, Lux Info Press) - Today the Provincial Tribunal ratified the six month sentence imposed against independent journalist Víctor Rolando Arroyo for a presumed crime of illegal economic activity. Víctor Rolando is a correspondent for the Independent Cuban Agency for Press and Information Lux Info Press and a founder of the Union of Independent Cuban Journalists and Writers (UPECI).

A few days ago, State Security agents searched the home of Víctor Rolando and arbitrarily confiscated a number of toys that were to have been distributed among the neediest children in Pinar del Río, as part of an initiative promoted by Corriente Martiana called The Three Wise Kings of the Millennium.

This jail sentence adds itself to the long list of repressive actions systematically perpetrated against independent Cuban journalists and confirms the inflexible and totalitarian character of the our government.

Lux Info Press agency calls upon all organizations which defend human rights, particularly those that watch over freedom of the press, and exhorts them to demand that the government of Cuba immediately and inconditionally release our colleague Víctor Rolando Arroyo.
