More than 30 Dissidents Arrested in Cuba

Contacto Magazine. Jan. 26

More than 30 Cuban dissidents have been arrested by the Castro's political police, according to Elizardo Sanchez, President of the Cuban Comission for the National Reconciliation and Human Rights.

The well known opposition leaders Oswaldo Paya (Christian Movement Liberation) and Hector Palacios Ruiz (Independent Center for Social Studies) were arrested January 25 in their houses.

Paya and Palacios Ruiz were taken to unknown political police stations in Havana, in the mid of a new wave of arrests, Sanchez said.

The two leaders were among the several Cuban dissidents who met with foreign officials and presidents during the 9th Iberian American Summit, celebrated in Havana last November.

According to Sanchez, more than 30 dissidents had been arrested in the last days, mostly in Havana.

The Cuban opposition dennounced last December that the case of the Cuban boy Elian Gonzalez is a "wonderful excuse" for Fidel Castro to arrest dissidents, after his political failure during the Iberian American Summit, when government heads met more frequently with Cuban dissidents than with the Cuban dictator.
