Sugar Harvest Behind Schedule -Says Analyst

SANTA CLARA, January 24 (Juan Carlos Recio, Cuba Press) - The sugar harvest in the province of Villa Clara could be prolonged by more than two months due to breakdowns, lack of fuel and other causes.

A source in the sugar industry does not agree with the information given by the official media that progress is stable and the yield is high compared to the previous year.

Concrete examples of stoppages in sugar mills because of breakdowns, from hours to days, give the lie to the triumphalism of leaders in the sugar industry. Up to the present, the following mills have stopped, among others: the Luis Arcos Bergnes, the José María Pérez, the George Washington, and the Pedro Carbó Serbia.

The source also estimates that even though it appears that the present harvest will take its normal course, that does not guarantee outstanding results. The quality of the sugar cane is not the best and the stoppages could reoccur in the mills already producing. Other mills could be late coming on line for the same reasons.
