SANTA CLARA, January 24 (Juan Carlos Recio, Cuba Press) - The production of cigars for export did not start on January 18 as planned by CubaTabaco. The lack of first quality raw materials due to the rains during the last harvest, and an inappropriate acceleration in the cure of the tobacco leaf
are the principal obstacles in the actual stage of production.
At the end of every tobacco harvest, the good quality leaves are wholesaled abroad. Those of poorer quality are kept to be incorporated in the product manufactured in Cuba. It was these that became too moist and are not in adequate conditions to be used in manufacture.
The authorities decided to accelerate the cure of the cover leaf from 90 days to 30 to start production this year. The experiment did not work, the product was lost, and cigar production is still late.
There are still 39 million units in warehouses that foreign buyers did not include in their contracts. The Cuban side is trying to trade them for other products.
