HAVANA, January 25 (Oswaldo de Céspedes, CPI) - Oswaldo Payá Sardiñas and Héctor Palacios Ruiz were arrested at their homes this morning by agents of the Department of State Security, said Elizardo Sánchez Santacruz, of the Cuban Commission of Human Rights
and National Reconciliation.
Payá Sardiñas, 49, is the president of the Christian Liberation Movement. Palacios Ruiz, 56, is the director of the Independent Center for SocialStudies.
According to Sánchez Santacruz, both Payá and Palacios were taken to an unknown destination. Their relatives were not informed of the motives for the arrests.
CPI learned that there was a meeting planned this afternoon in Palacios' home of non-governmental organizations. The agenda of the meeting included discussing the Varela Project, the document "All United" promoted by the Christian Liberation Movement, as well as an analysis of the
necessity of achieveing unity among the various dissident organizations inside the island, according to Odilia Collazo Valdés, president of the Cuban Party For Human Rights and one of the participants invited to the meeting.
