State Security Continues Offensive Against Cuban Dissidents

HAVANA, January 20 (Marvin Hernández Monzón, Cuba Press) - Several dissidents were ejected yesterday from the Technical Department of Investigations headquarters when they tried to learn the conditions under which a dozen dissidents have been held since the end of 1999.

Among those present were Benancio Roberto Rodríguez, the president of the Fraternal Brothers for Dignity Movement; Santiago López, of the Martí Civic Union; Caridad González, of the Democratic Party 30th of November Frank País; and Carlos Alberto Rodríguez, the president of the ecologist organization Naturpaz.

While the State Security Major who calls himself Francisco Estrada pushed the group of dissidents toward the street, he told Carlos Alberto: "You know you have a reservation for a cell here, or would you rather stay now?"

The first lieutenant known as Gustavo issued a verbal summons for next Wednesday to Benancio Roberto Rodríguez, who had been recently released from the facility and instructed for a possible trial.

Dissidents in Havana think these measures are an indication that the political police intends to sustain the represive wave as punishment for the IX Iberoamerican Summit that turned out to be the Dissidents' Summit, according to various media around the world.
