Havana Plans to Bid for 2008 Olympic Games, Cuban Official Says

Sydney, Jan. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Havana, the capital of Cuba, will bid for the 2008 Olympic Games to embarrass the International Olympic Committee over its dependence on revenue from television rights, the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Cuba's Olympic Committee President, Jose Ramon Fernandez, as saying. Fernandez said in an interview with the newspaper that the move would unite economically disadvantaged nations against professionalism in athletics and that a Havana Games would restore the ideals and values implicit in the original concept of the Olympics. Fernandez said the Olympic movement was dominated by 15 to 20 national Olympic committees representing wealthy Western nations and the Cubans would work to unite the 180 committees that have many athletes who do not qualify for the games.

Fernandez, who is also vice-president of the Council of State and Ministers, heads Cuba's Ministry for the Interior and will be the country's representative for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, for which 206 Cuban athletes have already qualified.
