MATANZAS, February 28 (Caridad Díaz Beltrán, Lux InfoPress) - One hundred thousand arrobas of sugar cane burned at the Clotilde García cooperative in Matanzas, central Cuba, on Friday, February 11. The authorities have not been able to determine what started the fire.
At a meeting of the local Communist Party on the following Monday, Roberto Santos Nápoles warned that dissident Juan Pedroso Esquivel had to be watched closely, since he belonged to a counterrevolutionary organization and had been near the fields the day of the fire.
Pedroso reacted to the accusation, saying: "It seems that this gentleman forgot that we are not interested in sabotage, but in the democratization of our society."
Party Secretary Luis Pereiro later warned Pedroso's wife: "We are going to make him disappear for 20 years, because he belongs to a conterrevolutionary group."
Pedroso, 36, belongs to the Pedro Luis Boitel Movement for Democracy and was jailed recently after serving a one year jail sentence.
