Cuba begins lawsuit against US

BBC News Online. Monday, 28 February, 2000, 21:51 GMT

A court in Cuba has begun hearing a large claim for compensation against the United States for the economic losses caused by the US embargo against the island.

The lawsuit is being brought by several national associations, including Cuban farmers, a women's group and communist workers.

They're seeking damages of one-hundred-and-twenty-one billion dollars for the effects of US sanctions against Cuba, including legislation which punishes third parties doing business on the island.

A similar compensation case was brought last year for deaths and injuries caused by US policy towards Cuba, but it was dismissed by Washington as absurd.
