MIAMI, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Cuban American actor Andy Garcia is to play jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval in an HBO movie on the life of the Grammy-award winner who defected from communist Cuba in 1990.
The Miami Herald reported on Wednesday that shooting for the movie, which has a working title of ``Havana Nocturne,'' will begin in South Florida next month. Filming will also take place in Puerto Rico.
Sandoval, 50, won his fourth Grammy last year for his Latin jazz album ``Hot House.'' He was granted U.S. citizenship in November 1998 after an earlier application was turned down because he had once been a member of the Cuban Communist Party.
The movie will depict his rise to fame in Cuba and later problems with the authorities there. He defected in Europe in 1990 while touring with his mentor, the late Dizzie Gillespie.
Now a Miami resident, he has performed at the White House, the Academy Awards and at the Atlanta Olympics.
Garcia has taken trumpet lessons from Sandoval to prepare for the role, the Herald said.
