The Good and the Bad Press

Juan Carlos Linares, Asociación de Amistad Cuba - E.U.A.

HAVANA, February 1 - For Fidel Castro's Communist government there are only two kinds of press, the good and the bad.

The first is the "revolutionary," expressing the only opinion officially allowed in the country, that of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC). The other is the "sensationalist" and "immoral" which is to say, the one that points out aspects to the Cuban or international reality that the Communists don't want aired.

Not long ago, the "good" press carried the story of the sinking of a Cuban ship off the coast of Haiti. The ship was carrying a load of cement. It sank due to bad weather, with the loss of three Cuban and two Haitian crewmen.

Even though the public is aware of the way the "good" press qualifies, manipulates, dosifies and hides information, it would like to know all the details of the sinking, as well as its legal ramifications.

We hope we won't have to wait to find out when the "bad" press publishes them.
