Havana Cuba projects its economy will grow by 5 percent in the coming
year as it hopes to strengthen its recovery from economic sluggishness last
decade after the loss of its socialist trading partners.
Economy Minister Jorge Luis Rodriguez announced the new growth target on
Thursday while laying out other economic aims at this year's closing meeting of
the National Assembly, Cuba's Parliament.
After several bleak years marked by severe food shortages and massive
blackouts during the early 1990s, Cuba has seen average annual growth of 4.4%
beginning in 1995.
Rodriguez said he expected investment to grow in 2001 to 14%, including
projects in the principal economic sectors of electricity, nickel, sugar,
tourism, and communications.
