LAS TUNAS, November 30 (Pedro Faxas Galindo, FCDH) Eleven workers in
the "Batalla de Mal Tiempo" state co-op in this province clear fields
covered with "marabú," a particularly vicious to eradicate
tropical grass, without protective clothing.
Dissident Armando Padrón González is obligated to work in the
co-op because otherwise he would be classified as "socially dangerous"
and face several years in jail. He called the conditions of workers in the co-op
as "slavery." They have to clear fields 26 days a month for very
little pay, and are given minimal resources, such as gloves and protective
clothing, to do it with.
