CIENFUEGOS, August 29 (Dr. Sunset Nogueras Rofes) - The Provincial Medical Storage Company in Cienfuegos, after moving to the outskirts of the city a few weeks ago, has lost hunderds of scarce medicines to the high heat in its warehouses.
A technician with the company said the temperature in the warehouses customarily reaches 41 degrees Centigrade due to the composition of the cement roofs used. Most pharmaceuticals need to be stored at below 21 degrees Centigrade to preserve their long-term effectiveness.
Those medicines that are kept refrigerated are in facilities well distant from the distributing company, since the refrigeration equipment has not been put in service.
Workers at the company do not expect the problems will be solved, at least in the short term, since the government is giving priority to other economic objectives such as the tourist industry.
