Swedish Journalists Arrested In Havana

HAVANA, August 29 (Manuel David Orrio, CPI) - Three Swedish journalists were arrested in Havana at 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to independent journalist Adolfo Fernández Sainz.

The three, Birger Thuresson, Peter Götell and Helena Söderqvist, were in Havana to participate in two workshops with Cuban independent journalists.

On Monday the journalists met with about 20 of their Cuban colleagues and were planning to meet with others on Tuesday. The workshops are part of a project sponsored by the Swedish Liberal International Center.

The exact whereabouts of the three journalists was not known; dissident sources presumed that they were being held in the Immigration police headquarters pending deportation.

The Swedish foreign ministry and Reporters Without Frontiers have both presented protests to the Cuban government.
