HAVANA, August 28 (Oswaldo de Céspedes, CPI) Economic activity in Nuevitas, Camagüey province, in north central Cuba, has slowed down considerably as a result of drastic decreases in fuel allocations.
Local factories making cement, fertilizer and wire have all sent a considerable part of their work force home and cut production for lack of fuel. Another mainstay of the local economy, the fisheries industry, is operating at considerably diminished capacity. Finally, local transport is almost
nonexistent these days. Bus service connecting Nuevitas to Santiago de Cuba has been suspended.
Some residents have taken to the water in an effort to reach Florida. Others left behind to cope with the economic crisis complain that frontier guards helicopters patrolling the coast for rafters and drug smugglers never lack for fuel.
