HAVANA, August 25 (Fara Armenteros, UPECI) Several residents were affected by noxious fumes from escaping chlorine and hypochlorite gases in the neighborhood of Cristina Street in central Havana.
The manager of the plant denied the existence of any leaks just minutes before a valve ruptured in a tank allowing an even larger second leak of the gases.
The exact number of those injured was not immediately known, but several people complained of asthma and skin burns and at least two children were hospitalized as a result of the incident.
Roberto Díaz Jorge, a resident on Cristina Street, said that this was the third time that poisonous gases have been released there. "The plant endangers all those in the vicinity," he said. Residents and firemen assisted in the evacuation of the neighborhood.
