HAVANA, August 25 (Ricardo González Alfonso) – Four rafters were fined between 4,000 and 10,000 pesos for "illegally leaving the country." The four, Emilio García Galvez, 38, Eloy Paneque Ruiz, 35, Yilensy Otero Morales, 26, and Sobelia Lidia Fonseca, 27, left Cuba
on June 26 and were captured in international waters the next day by the Cuban coast guard, who returned them to the island. Once there, the woman was released and the three men were taken to State Security headquarters and held for three days.
On August 23, García Gálvez was fined 10,000 pesos and the rest 4,000 pesos each.
García Gálvez, an electrician, used to work as a street sweeper in the Havana municipality of Playa, earning 108 pesos a month plus incentive pay of 3 cents a meter of swept area. Three days after being released by State Security he was reassigned from his job to another one under
different economic conditions and he quit.
García Gálvez had left Cuba furtively in 1980 and gone back as part of an operative organized by exile organization Alpha 66 in January, 1981. He was caught the same day and served a ten year prison sentence.
