Deteriorating Housing Causes Concern In Havana

HAVANA, August 22 (Jesús Zúñiga) – At least 49 percent of the housing in Havana province is deteriorated and in danger of collapsing, according to sources close to the Popular Power (local government) of the province.

In the last few years, 217,000 units have been built while the population has doubled. Approximately 40,000 of those will not be finished until at least 2001.

In 1997, the economic crisis put a stop to all construction and repair of housing when the government decided to put all its resources into the construction of hotels and resorts for the tourism industry and of housing for foreign investors.
